The Sealyham was developed in the middle of the nineteenth century by Captain John Edwards by crossing hounds, the Dandie Dinmont, the basset of Flanders, the corgi, The West Highland terrier, and the wirehaired fox terrier. It was officially recognized in 1910

For years it was an excellent hunter in dens and lairs, capturer of foxes, otter, badgers, and skunks. Beautiful and amusing as this dog is, with its humorous beard and cheerful temperament, it has, like so many other terriers, become appreciated mainly as a companion dog.
